Care Instructions

Our fabric has been treated with a waterproof coating, anti microbial or mould proofing and UV protection for a longer lifespan.

The fabric weave and double skinned aspect of the construction make the tent waterproof.  The cotton fibers are woven tightly with small holes which close up when rainwater soaks in and then the water runs down the tightly pegged outer flysheet walls.  The inner tent wall is treated with the same protection and sits far enough from the outer wall to keep rain water from reaching the inside of the tent.

As a natural material, cotton tents need to be seasoned for the waterproofing to take effect. This means wetting your tent once for it to become waterproof. The first time you use your tent in the rain, the water will need to soak fully into the fibres, for them to swell. The fabric will then be ready for any rainy weather. We advise you put your tent up in the rain or soak the outer layer and then dry it fully before you take it for a rainy camping weekend. You should always fully dry both the inner and outer layers of the tent before packing it away to prevent mould and degradation of the fabric. Never put the tent away wet for more than 12 hours, even tho it has mould protection, after a while mould could cause permanent marks on the cotton.

To clean your tent from dark grainy marks like mud or bird droppings, wait for mark to dry then brush with a clean medium-hard brush lightly to get most of the dirt off, if there is any mark remaining, wash with cold water only or you could fade the colour from scrubbing with any chemicals.

Our fabric has been treated with UV protection but like any natural fabric, especially with our more environmentally friendly dyes, sun bleaching will occur over time. We think this adds to the character of the tent and we have chosen colours that will fade into even more beautiful shades as the tent ages.  Make sure you don’t hang any items such as, towels over your tent to dry or cover parts of the fabric during hot sunny days because this will leave marks as the un-covered parts of the tent bleach at a different rate to the items hung over them.We have all experienced funny sun-tan marks from missing patches with sun cream and it works just the same with partially covered tent fabric.

When putting up your tent, always make sure that the peg points are pegged evenly to make sure that there is no un-even pulling on the canvas - this will make your tent last longer.  Always put up your tent with the zips closed to avoid straining and incorrect tent setup pressure which could cause damage.
